We, the KwaZulu Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) and the KwaZulu Natal Church Leaders Group (KZNCLG), stand together in deep sorrow and solidarity with the communities affected by the recent devastating fires in our province. This month, fires in Boston, Karkloof, and Ward 34, Kenville Siyathuthuka Informal Settlement in Ethekwini have caused immense destruction. These tragedies have engulfed over  237 shelters, claimed the lives of 10 individuals, including 6 brave firefighters in Boston, and resulted in the loss of livestock and property.

We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones and to those who have suffered significant losses of property. Our hearts are heavy with grief, and our prayers are with the communities still in shock from these traumatic events.

The Council of Churches remains in constant communication with the affected communities, offering our support and urging our clergy to provide pastoral care and comfort to those grappling with the aftermath of these wildfires.

We also appeal to the public to exercise greater caution with objects that could potentially ignite wildfires. It is crucial that any possibility of an uncontrolled fire be reported to the authorities immediately.

We urge the municipality disaster units to intensify fire warning public education and to implement robust fire prevention and response mechanisms, particularly in informal settlements. These measures are vital to prevent further loss of life, property, and shelter.

Donations to aid those affected by these fires can be dropped off at 50 Langalibalele Street, Pietermaritzburg or contact Mxolisi at mnyuswa@kznccorg.za.  Any support the you can offer will help rebuild lives and restore hope in our communities.

May God’s peace and protection be with us all during this challenging time.
