Blue Communities Africa Water Project

Blue Communities Africa Water Project

The Blue Communities Project encourages municipalities and Indigenous communities to support the idea of a water commons framework — recognising that water is a shared resource for all, and that water and sanitation are human rights.

The project promotes publicly financed, owned and operated water and wastewater services. The mandate of implementing the Blue Communities Project in Africa is to empower local communities to assert their right to water, protect water as a common good, and foster equitable water management practices.

This project aims to create a new narrative that transcends traditional approaches and emphasises community self-management.

Primary objectives
  • Recognition of water as a common good — affirm water as a fundamental human right and a shared resource essential for life.
  • Community self-management — advocate for the right to community self-management of water resources.
  • Opposition to privatisation — reject all forms of privatisation, commercialisation and commodification of water resources.
  • Transparent environmental and administrative management — ensure transparent and environmentally responsible governance of water resources.
  • Wastewater management — commit to proper management of wastewater, emphasising recycling and sustainable disposal practices.
