Church & People Living with Disability

KZNCC's Church & People Living with Disability programme promotes the full integration of persons with disabilities in churches. Within our churches there is a significant number of people who have physical, emotional, sensory, developmental and intellectual disabilities — people with disabilities who often experience marginalisation due to discriminatory social attitudes and practices.

This programme aims to affirm that everyone is made in God's image and has inherent dignity and worth, and is to be equally respected. Furthermore, that disability is part of the diversity of humankind created by God.

Aiming towards a disability-inclusive church: the church becoming fully accessible.

Primary objectives
  • Establish Disability Liberation Theology that promotes religious, spiritual, social and emotional development of people with an intellectual disability within churches.
  • Eliminate physical and communication barriers — such as steps to the altar and lack of large-print prayer books, as well as attitudinal barriers — that can prevent people with disabilities from participating fully in church.
  • Assist groups and guilds within the church to enable the full participation of persons with disabilities within their organisations, events and services.
  • Introduce in liturgy, hymns and scriptures the use of disability-sensitive language within the church framework.
  • Employ persons with a disability within church structures and organisations to raise awareness on disability.
