Psychosocial Support to Street Dwellers — Music & Art

The Psychosocial Support Program is tailor-made to help Pietermaritzburg street dwellers cope with their trauma. The programme entails three core activities:

Street Outreach Program — going out to street dwellers, engaging and talking to them about their experiences as homeless people, and most importantly their experience with drugs and substance abuse.

Nutritional & wellbeing support — addressing participants' nutritional needs and overall health by providing personal hygiene kits and small hampers.

Music as a tool for healing — the Harmony Haven Program is a music programme for street dwellers, creating an enabling environment in which they can tell their story through music, rhythm and dance.

Primary objectives
  • Increase the self-esteem of street dwellers.
  • Create a safe space where feelings and emotions can be expressed in a positive way.
  • Improve the emotional stability of street dwellers.
  • Discuss possible re-unification with family or other significant persons.
  • Discuss income-generation opportunities with referrals to relevant partners.
